
One day the children ask their father to buy a broken down jalopy they play on in a nearby junk yard. Despite the set-backs of Potts' failed inventions the family is content.

The tale focuses on the fanatical Caractacus Potts, a struggling inventor barely capable of supporting himself, his looney father, and his two unkempt children. In celebration Potts, Truly, and the children, weave a tale about a happy family with a magical flying car in the faraway land of Vulgaria. Potts works on the broken down jalopy and transforms it into an attractive and functional automobile which they name Chitty Chitty Bang Bang describing the engine sound. The family's earnings from the venture are short lived, but enough to purchase the jalopy. Unbeknownst to him she is the daughter of a successful candy factory owner. He decides with the assistance and encouragement of the lovely young lady he met, Truly Scrumptious, to make musical candy.

Potts, not wanting to disappoint his children, tries to raise money to purchase the jalopy.
